Anyway to have 2 devices share the same registration

Posted by ipfreely on Fri, 11/13/2009

Is there any way to have 2 endpoints say Polycom 330 and an xlite softphone share the same registration? I know I can have each have there own extension and place them in a ring group. I am short on licenses though. I believe this is an asterisk limitation, but am not sure.

Thanks,
Chris A

no this is not possible. make the xlite a special line instead of an extension and change the extension's script to tl-multidevice-exten

sorry Kam I just saw this question, it was a very old post and would be easier to ask a fresh question sometimes rather than resurecting dead posts.

Thirdlane has a category called Special Lines. Its near Auto Attendants, Feature Codes, and Special Mailboxes. These are essentially basic SIP accounts without extra features like voicemail, user portals, find-me/follow-me, call blockng, etc. Its a plain jane SIP account without even an implied extension number, just a device id.

One common trick is to having extension 101 be able to have more than one registered phone is to make a special line. I tend to give it a similar name like 101a or 101m. Then in the extension section for 101 I change the script to tl-multidevice-exten which brings up an additional box to select more phones to ring in parallel. I then select 101a from this list. On the new phone/softphone I enter in the user and password for 101a so that both devices can ring when 101 is called. I also set the callerID number to 101 for the 101a special line so that when he/she makes an internal call they see 101 not 101a (returning calls from a dialpad is not possible when using letters so masquerade the callerid to just its parent extension number)
