Hi,
We want to begin a server upgrade of mte. We have a scheduled dowtime window early tomorrow morning. My guys have setup the new server, but I do not have a license for it. I have sent Alex the info but he must be unavailable for the long weekend. Is there any way to get a temp license for 10 days until Alex can get me the proper one next week?
I would suggest that
I would suggest that something should be done in this area. A way to get a temporary license until a real license can be installed. In case you need to move to a new server (planned or disaster) or the renewal reminder failed.

a lot of thought is being placed in this arena. It may require more phone-home features and if it fails to phone home within a given time-frame then refuse access. It's always difficult to make sure understandable circumstances are easy to accommodate without leaving ones self open for blatant abuse. Without some sort of off-site licensing system its not possible to move a license. Essentially a second license is created with the hope that the individual has the integrity to not continue to use the original license on the old hardware.
There is also discussion about more nagging of renewals as the maintenance period draws to an end. Perhaps by creating an admin email address where these sort of notices along with nightly checks of problems can be emailed.
As far as I remember you can restore the backup and get a running system on the trial, you just can't change anything in the GUI before the license is ready.
I did it last week and was running on the trial for 24 ours or so :-)
