Intermittent Call Quality Issues

Posted by bhallottawa on Tue, 05/11/2010

Good Evening;

We are having issues with our MTE PBX. for the past couple of weeks, we have been running into an issue with all of our tenants where there is either no inbound audio or outbound audio (one or the other).

My first thoughts were bandwidth, so on Friday we relocated the production MTE to a collocation with a 100meg connection eliminating that concern.

My next thought was it was the SIP Provider however we have 3 different providers and the behavior is the same with all of them.

There is no pattern to help, it's completely random and one call will be effected, the next will fine.

The MTE is running on a HP DL380 with 6 gig of ram and 500g of hard drive space.

We tested on a simple version of Asterisk without Thirdlane on an identical server, and we don't get the issues.

WE are despirate for assistance - is anybody else running into this? Our customers are quite annoyed

Thanks;
Bob

you might want to check the bug tracker to see what bugs your particular version of asterisk experiences. you cant expect people to solve your problems when noone even knows what versions you're using. 95% of all the 1.6.x.x versions are bugged to fuck and back.

ouch... good point I didn't give much information did I? Sorry about that, it's just I'm a tad frustrated...

Asterisk 1.6.0.26 built by root @ distro-e5.asterroid.com on a i686 running Linux on 2010-03-18 12:37:59 UTC

Here is a question - do you recommend that we use 1.4? if I back up my tenants, build install 1.4 that comes with the thirdlane distro, will I be able to recover my backed up tenants?

Thanks;
Bob

Additionally, I just noticed that Munin is reporting errors on my eth0 - they just popped up since the relocation on Friday. does this report reflect (typically) network issues or actual hardware issues (in your opinion)

i dont use mumin, for ethernet errors I check my interfaces on my switches for underruns, resets etc. Sometimes the switch and network controller have compatibility issues (anyone who remembers issues with cisco switches and 3com controllers or marvell controllers from 2003 will know what i mean).

I would first suspect your version of asterisk for the 1way audio and no audio. Does 1.6.0.15 have the same issues?

you dont have to restore to get 1.4 to work, you simply have to:

fetch all the development libraries the iso SHOULD have included to compile asterisk
remove contents of /usr/lib/asterisk/modules
download compile and install asterisk 1.4.26.3
re-install thirdlane webmin module so that it fixes the scripts for 1.4 syntax
restart asterisk

because those other versions have dtmf issues. Theres some DTMF fixes in 1.4.31, but my tested showed a new problem... losing dtmf digits when testing from the phone to a test application.

Erik - you make it sound simple to do the backroll to 1.4.26.3 however my gut tells me I'll screw this up and this is sadly our production server. is it possible you could send me the "idiot proof" instructions. My customers are extremely pissed off with the continued issues.

I'm sure we have aligned everything and played out all the optons correctly:
1) everything is locked down to use ports 10000 - 20997 (8)
2) we have installed g729 codec
3) all the phones have been programmed to match the codec and port settings

thanks;
Bob
